Unit Manager – Nursing Services Position Summary
The Unit Manager is responsible for the overall supervision, coordination, and management of nursing activities on an assigned unit. This role ensures the delivery of high-quality, resident-centered care in compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations. The Unit Manager provides leadership, oversight, and support to nursing staff while maintaining clinical excellence, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities Clinical & Resident Care - Oversee the 24-hour day-to-day operation of the assigned nursing unit
- Ensure comprehensive, accurate, and timely nursing documentation (progress notes, flow sheets, MMQ, Medicare documentation, behavior notes, weights, etc.)
- Conduct daily rounds to assess resident needs and monitor care delivery
- Participate in weekly wound rounds and oversee wound measurements and documentation
- Monitor medication administration, treatments, IV therapy, and physician orders for accuracy and compliance
- Provide direct nursing care as needed
- Coordinate new admissions, including room readiness and resident orientation
- Communicate changes in resident condition to physicians, families, and leadership
- Collaborate with physicians, consultants, and interdisciplinary team members
Leadership & Supervision - Supervise, mentor, and delegate responsibilities to Team Leaders and nursing staff
- Set daily expectations and ensure shift-to-shift communication
- Participate in staff scheduling, hiring, interviews, orientation, and competency evaluations
- Conduct performance evaluations and assist with disciplinary actions as needed
- Lead regular unit meetings across all shifts to promote communication and teamwork
Regulatory Compliance & Quality Assurance - Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations
- Participate in survey inspections and audits
- Maintain Infection Control surveillance and reporting
- Participate in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) initiatives
- Ensure HIPAA compliance and resident confidentiality
- Maintain accurate incident and investigation reports within required timeframes
Care Planning & Discharge Planning - Assist in developing, implementing, and updating resident-centered care plans
- Participate in IDC, family, and discharge planning meetings
- Collaborate with Social Services on discharge planning and resident communication
Staff Development - Assist in planning and conducting in-service training and orientation programs
- Promote continuing education and professional development for nursing staff
- Provide leadership training for staff nurses and team leaders
Safety, Infection Control & Environment - Ensure compliance with safety standards, infection control practices, and hand hygiene
- Maintain clean, safe, and sanitary nursing and treatment areas
- Participate in fire safety and disaster preparedness drills
- Monitor proper use and operation of nursing equipment
Equipment & Supplies - Oversee ordering and inventory of medications, medical supplies, and unit equipment
- Promote cost-effective use of supplies
- Assist with fiscal management related to unit resources
Resident Rights - Ensure residents are treated with dignity, respect, and compassion
- Maintain confidentiality of resident information
- Support Social Services with resident notifications and room changes
- Advocate for resident rights and quality of life
Qualifications - Current RN or LPN license (state-specific)
- Long-term care or skilled nursing experience preferred
- Previous supervisory or leadership experience strongly preferred
- Strong knowledge of regulatory compliance and survey processes
- Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills
- Ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage time effectively
