I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary: The George Washington University has many students and alumni interested in attending law school and as such this position plays an important role for current students in all undergraduate schools ( CCAS , Elliott, SEAS , GWSB , and Milken) and GW alumni for the purposes of exploring whether law school is the best fit for their long-term career goals; considering an applicant's strengths and weaknesses and whether they are ready to apply for law school admissions; how to best prepare for the LSAT or GRE ; identifying potential reach, target, and safety law schools; developing strong application materials; and exploring short-term and long-term career options with a J.D. degree. The Senior Academic Advisor, General and Pre-Law Advising works closely with ABA -accredited law schools, GW law-related student organizations, national standardized test preparatory companies, and GW faculty members in support of pre-law students. This position will report to the CCAS Director of Undergraduate and Pre-Professional Advising and the Assistant Director of Academic Advising. The Senior Academic Advisor, General and Pre-Law Advising guides student development in the classroom, through academic advising, and co-curricular programs and opportunities. This role will primarily support our incoming first-year and transfer students who express interest in attending law school upon graduation from GW. In addition, this position educates students on university policies and procedures, goal setting, academic planning, and course selection. The duties of this position include: Advises GW undergraduate students, specifically incoming and transfer students, in individual and group settings on the Foggy Bottom and Mount Vernon campuses regarding preparation for applying to law school; Assist with creating and executing for law-related workshops, information sessions, and the annual Washington, D.C. Law School Fair; Maintains the pre-law website, newsletter, listserv, and social media content. Creates and updates worksheets, handouts, and other resources for pre-law students; Holds regular office hours for students on the Foggy Bottom and Mount Vernon campuses - occasionally in the evenings or weekends close to LSAT score release dates; Maintains detailed advising notes and records of all students who have self-identified as a pre-law student from matriculation to graduation; Participates in professional development opportunities, including maintaining membership in pre-law advising associations (e.g., NAPLA , AccessLex Institute, etc), attends local, regional, and national conferences, and visits with area law schools. Stays abreast of relevant changes in the legal profession and accreditation (e.g., American Bar Association membership); Performs general Columbian College of Arts and Sciences ( CCAS ) Academic Advisor duties, when necessary (e.g., participating in new student orientation, commencement, and other large-scale events). Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position. Minimum Qualifications: Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications: Experience advising undergraduate students, preferably in pre-law, pre-professional, or career services settings. Familiarity with the law school application process, including LSAT / GRE preparation, personal statement development, and school selection strategies. Knowledge of ABA accreditation standards and trends in the legal profession. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with diverse student populations, alumni, faculty, and external partners. Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and deliver workshops, fairs, and other large-scale events. Proficiency with student information systems, content management systems, and digital communication platforms (e.g., websites, newsletters, and social media). Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to maintain accurate advising records. Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends for events or peak advising periods. Commitment to continuous professional development and engagement in relevant professional associations (e.g., NAPLA , PLANC , AccessLex Institute).
