About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled User Experience (UX) / Usability Specialist with expertise in the U.S. Web Design System (USWDS) to support a United States Government project on a full-time basis. This project supports the 21st Century Integrated Digital Experience Act (21st IDEA). The ideal candidate will provide instant UX guidance based on industry best practices , produce wireframes and storyboards, and translate user flows into technical specifications for developers. You will play a key role in ensuring an intuitive, accessible, and effective user experience within our existing technical environment and constraints.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert UX guidance in real-time, leveraging industry best practices.
  • Ensure compliance with U.S. Web Design System (USWDS) and usability principles.
  • Design best-in-class UX solutions within ITA’s technical constraints.
  • Develop wireframes, prototypes, and storyboards to illustrate user journeys and UX solutions.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders, designers, and developers to align business and technical needs.
  • Translate wireframes/storyboards into detailed technical specifications for developers.
  • Identify and resolve usability issues through testing, research, and feedback loops.
  • Advocate for inclusive and accessible design based on Section 508 compliance and WCAG standards.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of UX/UI experience, with a focus on web usability and accessibility.
  • Strong familiarity with U.S. Web Design System (USWDS) and its implementation.
  • Expertise in user research, wireframing, prototyping, and usability testing.
  • Proficiency with UX tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, Axure, or Balsamiq.
  • Experience working within technical constraints and legacy environments.
  • Strong understanding of HTML, CSS, and front-end development principles (coding not required but a plus).
  • Knowledge of 508 compliance, WCAG guidelines, and digital accessibility best practices.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working on government or public sector UX projects.
  • Background in human-computer interaction (HCI) or cognitive psychology.
  • Experience with Agile development environments and collaborating with developers.
