Slate is looking for a versatile, experienced producer to help us make our twice-weekly internet culture podcast, ICYMI . The person we’re looking for loves audio, understands that the serious and the silly aren’t always mutually exclusive, and is curious about the way the internet impacts our everyday lives. They have a natural interest in adding perspective and context to the fast-moving trends and stories we see online. They have an eye for what's happening in comment sections and an ear for good conversation. They enjoy going down internet rabbit holes that are broader than their own personal interests. They can move adroitly between booking, recording, editing, mixing, and creative troubleshooting. The ideal candidate is equally adept at finding the arcs (or narratives) within interviews and chatty conversations. They can integrate specific notes and turn around careful edits on tight deadlines. They have an ear for what to cut and keep from freewheeling or seemingly off-topic moments without losing the throughline of the episode. They have experience publishing episodes on a regular schedule. Applicants must be self-starters who are efficient, personable, open to experimentation, and find real joy in the work. This position can be located in Slate’s New York or D.C. office. We will consider remote work for the right candidate. The annual base pay range for this job is $85,000-$90,000. This is a position covered under a collective bargaining agreement between Slate and the Writers Guild of America East. Key Responsibilities Work with the production team (hosts and senior supervising producer) to conceive episode ideas, segments, possible guests, and bonus content. Identify and keep up with trends and behaviors across social media platforms. Contribute to the research and prep for interviews and assist hosts in reporting. Find usable audio (clips and music) that strengthens episodes. Schedule interviews and oversee recording sessions, usually over remote connections. Edit rough cuts and implement script notes quickly and sensitively. Deliver final mixes in Pro Tools. Requirements Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience. At least three years of experience in radio or podcasting in a journalistic environment. Excellent editing chops and a sense of fun. Mastery of professional audio editing software, preferably Pro Tools. $85,000 - $90,000 a year Slate offers a comprehensive benefits program that gives eligible employees the flexibility to choose the right benefits for themselves and their families. There are three subsidized medical plans and two dental plans, provided by Aetna, which can be paired with flexible spending accounts.
