  • IT Specialist I, $45,000 - $55,000
  • IT Specialist II, $56,000 - $65,000

Position Summary

The IT Support Specialist I or II is a member of the Information Technology Team, in the Operations Department, responsible for coordinating, maintaining, and supporting the County’s technical equipment and enterprise software systems. This position ensures compatibility and integration with Lake County’s strategic objectives. The role involves working on complex projects that may include equipment setup, installations, and vendor coordination. The Support Specialist troubleshoots and resolves hardware and software issues, assists with technology upgrades and maintenance, and ensures compliance with County hardware/software standards, inventory procedures, and digital accessibility policies.

IT Support Specialist I is an entry-level position, expected to perform routine technical support duties with supervision.

IT Support Specialist II has a higher level of experience and is expected to handle more complex troubleshooting, projects, and independent work.

Essential Functions

Technical Support + Troubleshooting

  • Install, configure, image, and test desktop hardware, software, and peripherals, ensuring proper connectivity and function.
  • Identify and resolve user issues related to computers, audio/visual equipment, printers, phones, and networking hardware.
  • Utilize ticketing systems to track and document issues and solutions.
  • Work with collaboratively to troubleshoot network, hardware, or software issues that go beyond desktop support.

Techology Implementation + Maintenance

  • Support projects involving equipment replacement, software upgrades, and technical setup.
  • Maintain up-to-date inventory of all County hardware/software assets and support the Replacement Plan.
  • Recommend desktop hardware and software standards aligned with County needs.
  • Operate tools and test equipment for system maintenance and troubleshooting.

Digital Accessibility + Compliance

  • Conduct accessibility evaluations of County digital assets using manual and automated tools.
  • Maintain awareness of public sector accessibility laws including WCAG 2.1 AA, Section 508, and ADA.
  • Participate in vendor/software procurement processes to ensure accessibility requirements are met and contractual obligations are enforced.
  • Provide or coordinate training for staff to improve accessibility across County digital tools and communications.
Technical Knowledge
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Adobe, Zoom, Teams, and other business productivity software.
  • Understanding of telephone systems, fiber optic and Ethernet cabling, switches, and network protocols.
  • Familiarity with accessibility technologies and evaluation tools.
  • Knowledge of network operating systems and basic cybersecurity practices.

Analytical + Organizational Skills

  • Ability to troubleshoot technical issues logically and efficiently.
  • Analyze problems and implement effective solutions.
  • Read and interpret technical manuals, regulations, and documentation.
  • Organize materials, track equipment, and maintain accurate records.

Interpersonal + Communication Skills

  • Provide effective, professional customer service in person, by phone, and via email.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members, departments, and external vendors.

Requirements

Compensation will be determined by the applicant's full skillset with consideration of the following:

IT Support Specialist I

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s degree in IT or a related field preferred.
  • At least 1 year of experience in a technical support or help desk role.
  • Basic knowledge of computer hardware, operating systems, and network systems.

IT Support Specialist II

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of increasingly responsible experience in IT support or systems administration.
  • Strong troubleshooting, project coordination, and user support skills.

Physical Activity & Work Environment

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Prolonged periods of standing or walking.
  • Frequent bending, kneeling, reaching, or climbing.
  • Occasional pushing, pulling, or moving objects.
  • Use of hands for repetitive motions such as typing, writing, or operating equipment.
  • Operation of standard office equipment (computers, phones, copiers, etc.).
  • Visual acuity to read and produce accurate documents and materials.
  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders, or work at heights.
  • Ability to operate motor vehicles and/or machinery.
  • Standard office environment with controlled temperature and lighting.
  • Work performed in a loud, noisy, or distracting environment.
  • Interaction with the public, sometimes in high-pressure or emotionally charged situations.
  • Travel to offsite locations or satellite facilities.
  • Work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven, or high-volume environment.
  • May be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, or be on-call.
