Job Description

Archeology/Preservation Placement

Archeology/Preservation placements work with professionals including archeologists, museum curators, historic landscape architects and preservation maintenance workers to fulfill a broad range of responsibilities related to historic preservation. Placements carry out field and office work related to historic landscapes, archeological sites, traditional Hawaiian structures and archeological museum collections. Field work includes identification of historic sites, data collection, condition assessments and mapping. Office work involves writing reports, conducting research, managing geo-referenced data and updating site and museum collections records.

Location: Honaunau, HI

Schedule: October 20, 2025 - April 30, 2026

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Archeological inventory and site condition assessment surveys
  • GPS data collection
  • Field mapping
  • GIS data entry and manipulation
  • Artifact conservation
  • Museum collection data management
  • Documentation of historic site and traditional structures preservation maintenances

Placements will work in a team of three individuals with one designated lead.

Marginal Duties:

  • Assist the park Biological Science Technician and Pest Controller with invasive plant, insect and animal management
  • Assist Interpretation staff with cultural demonstrations and visitor contacts
  • Assist Visitor/Resource Protection with periodic trail patrols

Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to work safely in outdoor settings in hot temperatures
  • Demonstrated ability to write clearly and maintain field notebooks and data collectors
  • Experience using Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Successfully completed coursework in any of the following: Archeology, anthropology, geography, GIS, cartography/mapping, museum studies, historic landscape architecture or related fields

This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with identification of Hawaiian archeological site and feature types
  • Knowledge of Hawaiian native plants and cultivars
  • Experience writing inventory and treatment documents such as Cultural Landscape Inventories and Archeological Inventory survey reports

Hours:

40 per week

Living Accommodations:

Housing is not provided. Candidates must have or be able to find their own housing within commuting distance of the Park.

Compensation:

Living allowance - $500/week

Housing stipend - $1,200/month

One-time travel allowance - $1,500

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
