Job Description
The Role: The Farm Manager oversees daily farm operations to maximize crop yield and quality while staying within budget. They manage ranch supervisors, coordinate fieldwork, and ensure timely application of farming practices such as irrigation and fertilization. The role requires regular field scouting, maintaining organized infrastructure, and ensuring compliance with all regulatory and safety standards. Strong collaboration with farm support teams and leadership is essential to optimize resources and drive efficiency.

Areas of Responsibility :
- Financial Planning
- Manage the farm to maximize yields, quality at a cost per carton that meets or exceeds budget.
- Strive to maximize buying power and resources including labor, new innovations, equipment, fertilizer and water.
- Collaborates on budget development and is responsible for meeting or exceeding weekly targets for cost per acre, yield, and cost per unit.
- Regulatory Compliance and Human Resources
- Maintain compliance to all regulatory programs, which include Fresno County, food safety, organic, pesticide use reports, and nitrogen management.
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements, including Fresno County laws, food safety policies, CCOF standards, and nitrogen reporting.
- Manage farm staffing, including hiring, training, safety enforcement, and addressing employee concerns.
- Build a structure of accountability among the forepersons and employees.
- Farm Management and Efficiencies
- Scout fields regularly and ensure timely fertilizer, irrigation, and cultural practices to support efficient farm operations.
- Organize schedules, monitor job quality, and maintain clean, orderly farm infrastructure.
- Maintain a consistent on-farm presence to ensure operational success.
- Optimize farm resources and daily operations to maximize efficiency and yield.
- Collaborate on business planning and coordinated purchasing to reduce costs.
- Implement technology and standardized protocols to improve productivity and consistency.
- Plant Nutrition and Soil Health
- Monitor and manage soil and plant fertility through crop rotation, composting, and testing programs.
- Collaborate with agronomists and PCAs to develop effective fertilizer and pest management plans.
- Create and implement best practice protocols to enhance crop quality, yields, and regulatory compliance.
- Irrigation
- Collaborate on improving irrigation efficiency through soil moisture monitoring and technology.
- Schedule and execute irrigations, maintain wells and equipment, and keep detailed records.
- Develop and implement best practice protocols for irrigation by crop and season.
- Manage water quality testing and water allocations to support farm operations.
- Ongoing Grower & T&A Management Fertility, Irrigation and Soil Management Education: Attend regular local meetings providing education on best practices for irrigation, fertility and soil disease prevention.
- Environmental & Regulatory Compliance: Work with appropriate person or agency to ensure that all farms are in compliance with current and future regulations and reporting requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Education and/or Experience: Requires a bachelor's degree and at least seven years of relevant experience in crop science or related fields, preferably with specific crops like tomatoes and leafy vegetables.
- Language Skills: Must be fluent in English and Spanish, with strong reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills for interpreting documents and communicating professionally.
- Mathematical Skills: Needs solid mathematical skills to perform calculations and interpret data such as graphs and percentages.
- Reasoning Ability: Must have strong problem-solving abilities, capable of managing multiple tasks and interpreting diverse instructions effectively.
- Computer Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) is required.
- Valid driver's license is mandatory; PAC, QAL, PCA certifications are preferred but not required.
