The Opportunity

AAU is pleased to announce an opening for an Editorial and Communications Assistant. This role will support the AAU Communications Department's critical mission to enhance the brand of, shape the narrative about, and advance the policy interests of America's leading research universities by performing various administrative tasks, producing editorial content, and managing projects. Responsibilities include helping with the drafting, production, and distribution of AAU's public communications; planning and managing meetings for AAU's constituent group for top communications professionals at our member universities; and assisting where needed with the department's overall activities. The Assistant will also manage departmental records, help organize content on the departmental SharePoint site, and support special communications projects.

This role requires a highly organized, detail-oriented individual with excellent writing and communication skills. The ideal candidate enjoys working in a fast-paced environment and can effectively balance multiple tasks while providing superior administrative support.

This position operates primarily out of AAU's DC office, with the flexibility of a professional hybrid office environment allowing eligible staff to telecommute up to 2 days a week after completing 90 days of employment. This position is classified as full-time, non-exempt.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the United States.
  • By the date of hire, applicants must reside within the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

Required Qualifications

  • 1-3 years of experience in content creation roles, including research, drafting, editing, and proofreading (volunteer or school experience will be considered in meeting this qualification).
  • 1-3 years of experience in administrative support roles involving organization, coordination, and managing multiple tasks (volunteer or school experience will be considered in meeting this qualification).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Strong communication skills with a command of grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Superior organizational skills, with attention to detail and the ability to manage competing demands.
  • Commitment to creating a supportive, cooperative work environment while adhering to ethical standards and AAU policies and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate or bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, English, public relations, marketing, or other related majors, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience working in a non-profit, association, and/or higher-education setting.
  • Experience with Zoom, SharePoint, OneDrive, association management systems, CRM, mass email systems, and website content management systems.

Compensation

The total compensation package for this role includes:

  • A base annual salary of $53,000 - $59,000 (commensurate with experience).
  • A robust benefits and perks package, including fully employer-funded medical and dental insurance premiums for employees, their spouse, and qualified dependents; an employer-funded 403(b) retirement account contribution valued at 10% of the employee's yearly salary with full vestment after one year; a monthly commuter stipend; generous leave options, and more.
