In this role, you'll perform property inspections, conduct real estate market research, and apply valuation techniques to ensure equitable property appraisals.

Examples of Duties
  • Analyze and list all real and personal property within the City of West Allis. Classify property by its use.
  • Inspect property (residences and buildings), new construction and major improvements to existing structure to establish value.
  • Prepare documentation of completed inspections.
  • Take photographs of properties.
  • Utilize sketching software to create accurate drawings of buildings and other structures.
  • Appraise real and personal property for assessment purposes using the sales comparison, cost, and income capitalization approaches.
  • Gather information about property by communicating with buyers and sellers, fielding sales, conducting rental surveys, examining leases, noting building occupancy and obtaining other economic information necessary to estimate market values of a real property.
  • Make recommendations to the Board of Review.
  • Present testimony before the Board and Review and Circuit Court.
  • Provide prompt, courteous and customer focused service, information and assistance to departmental employees, the public, other city departments and other agencies; handle inquiries from property owners in person, over the phone and by e-mail.
  • Explain assessed values to property owners, leasing agents, managers and legal representatives.

Qualifications
  • Education in real estate, appraisal, economics, geography, urban planning, accounting, or business.
  • Experience in the assessment profession, appraisal profession, urban planning, or real estate.
  • Licenses: Residential Appraiser, Certified Residential Appraiser, Certified General Appraiser.
  • The DOR Property Appraiser certification must be obtained within six months of the hire date.
  • A Bachelor's or Associate's degree in Administrative Professional or a related field.

Method of Selection & Supplemental Information
The selection method will consist of one or more of the following: prescreen, interview, written tests, or other assessment methods.
