2026 Summer Intern - Discovery Chemistry - Analytical Research

The Analytical Research group is part of the Discovery Chemistry department in the Drug Discovery organization. Our team focuses on developing structure elucidation, high-throughput purification, and physicochemical screening techniques to support the discovery and development of novel molecules. Our mission is to deliver high-quality analytical data that guide molecular design, process development, and quality control. We apply state-of-the-art techniquesincluding chromatography, mass spectrometry, and NMR spectroscopyto elucidate chemical structures, reaction mechanisms, and stability profiles. We are passionate about scientific rigor, innovation, and cross-functional collaboration to bring transformative medicines to patients.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.

The Opportunity

• Contribute to the development of real-time analytical strategies for macrocyclic peptides.
• The project focuses on applying machine learning to analytical chromatography to help enable preparative separation.
• Develop and optimize analytical methods (HPLC, LC-MS, UV-Vis) for peptides.
• Develop a machine learning model to predict optimal separation conditions.
• Summarize and present experimental findings to multidisciplinary teams.
• This internship offers hands-on experience with advanced analytical instrumentation and exposure to a cross-functional research environment focused on next-generation therapeutic modalities.

Program Highlights

• Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
• Program start dates are in May/June 2026.
• A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

Who You Are

Required Education: Must be pursuing a Bachelor's Degree (enrolled student).

Required Majors: Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, or a related field.

Required Skills:

• Foundational knowledge and experience of organic chemistry.
• Basic understanding and hands-on experience in chromatography (HPLC/LC-MS) and spectroscopy (UV-Vis).
• Mass spectrometry.
• Proficiency in Python.
• Strong experimental and data interpretation skills.
• Enthusiasm for problem solving and innovation in analytical chemistry.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

• Experience with deep learning frameworks (e.g. PyTorch).
• Experience operating or interpreting data from HPLC or LC-MS.
• Prior laboratory experience.
• Proficiency with literature search.
• Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting. The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $45.00 hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
